Laughing Gas for Treating Dental Anxiety

Sedation Dentistry in Asheville, NC

Dr. Rebol and Dr. Sparks are experienced general dentists in Asheville, NC. If you experience dental anxiety, our doctors will walk you through what to expect during your dental procedures. Our team members are happy to answer any questions you might have before, during, or after your appointment.

Our sedation dentistry options include the use of local anesthetics to numb affected areas during procedures, as well as further sedation choices. We tailor patients’ sedative options to their unique needs and medical history. We will ensure that whatever sedation option you receive is safe and effective.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

You probably know nitrous oxide by the name laughing gas. It’s delivered to patients through a cannula on the nose and breathed in throughout the procedure. Nitrous oxide takes effect immediately and dissipates when you stop breathing it in. It keeps you relaxed and calm throughout your dental visit. This sedation option allows you to drive yourself to and from your appointment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation comes through a pill taken before you get to the dentist office. We’ll prescribe the pill and instruct you when to take it before your procedure. Oral conscious sedation provides deeper sedation than laughing gas. While it isn’t designed to put you fully to sleep, you may fall asleep or have periods of amnesia from the procedure.

Because the sedation is deeper, you’ll need a ride to and from your appointment. Oral conscious sedation can take hours to fully wear off.

Who Benefits From Sedation Dentistry?

We most commonly use sedation dentistry for patients who suffer from dental anxiety. Fear of the dentist occurs on a spectrum. Some patients may only be triggered by certain sounds or noises at the dentist, while others may not be able to set foot in the dentist office. We cater to patients with all levels of dental anxiety to make them feel comfortable in our office.

If you’ve avoided regular dental care, there’s a higher chance of you needing more extensive dental care. Sedation allows us to perform more extensive procedures all in one visit. This is true even if you don’t have dental anxiety. It helps patients remain calm and able to sit in the dental chair for longer periods of time.

Sedation also benefits patients who have movement disorders or other issues that may prevent them from being able to remain still for dental care. The top thing we worry about is your safety. If you make involuntary movements throughout care, you may risk injury due to the delicate nature of dental work. With sedation, you can safely get the dental care you need.

We would hate to see our patients suffer from putting off their necessary dental care due to dental anxiety. If you have had a previous bad experience in the dental chair at another dentist’s office, please let us know. We will do everything we can to ensure that your experience in our office is a positive one.

We encourage patients to bring a trusted friend to their appointment if they would like to. Listening to music may also help noise-sensitive patients remain calm in the dental chair.
